Metro Brands Limited has announced the appointment of Sonny Iqbal as a Non-Executive Independent Director, effective August 5, 2026, with shareholders approving the move at the company’s 49th Annual General Meeting held on September 16, 2026. The appointment underscores Metro Brands’ intent to strengthen governance and independent oversight as it advances its growth trajectory.
Sonny Iqbal brings a global perspective on leadership development, organization consulting, and family enterprise advisory. He spent 27 years at Egon Zehnder, helping to establish the firm’s offices in New Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai, and continues there as a Senior Advisor. At Egon Zehnder, he co-founded and co-led the global Family Business Advisory Practice, guiding multigenerational enterprises through succession, founder transition, governance structures, and professionalization. His work has appeared in multiple papers, including six articles in the Harvard Business Review. He also serves as a Senior Advisor at ChrysCapital and has held seats on various boards.
Prior to Egon Zehnder, Iqbal held key positions with the Oberoi Group across India, the United Kingdom, and the Middle East, and managed the financial and travel services business of American Express in India. He holds a BA (Hons) from St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi, an MBA in Marketing from the University of Surrey, UK, and a Postgraduate Diploma from the Oberoi Centre of Learning and Development. The appointment is for a term of five years, with effect from August 05, 2026, and is subject to shareholder approval; he is non-liable to retire by rotation during the term.
Metro Brands’ board thus gains an independent director with deep governance and leadership-change experience, a profile that is well aligned with the retailer’s ongoing professionalization and strategic governance priorities as it continues to expand its footprint.
