SJVN Extends Bhupender Gupta’s CMD Charge, Signaling Leadership Continuity

A formal update from SJVN Limited confirms that the Ministry of Power has extended the additional charge of the post of Chairman and Managing Director to Bhupender Gupta, the current CMD of NHPC Limited, with effect from August 1, 2026, for a period of three months or until a full-time incumbent is appointed, whichever comes earliest. The move ensures leadership continuity at the Navratna CPSE as it navigates a transitional window ahead of a long-term appointment.

Gupta brings more than three decades in the power sector, including 31 years in Power CPSEs. His career spans pivotal roles across hydro, thermal, renewable energy, transmission and distribution. After starting at ACC Ltd in 1991, he joined SJVN in 1995 and contributed to commissioning at the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri hydro project, with a subsequent deputation to Bhutan for the Tala hydropower project. He later held senior positions at REC Ltd., served as Director (Technical) at the Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority in Bhutan, and was Director (Technical) at THDCIL. Since May 2025, he has been the CMD of NHPC, also chairing NHDC Limited and Loktak Downstream Hydroelectric Corporation Limited. The profile notes milestones under his leadership, including major commissioning and project-management achievements across his career, such as advancing the COD of units at Subansiri Lower HEP and other key hydro projects, as well as noteworthy progress in solar and other renewables.

Looking ahead, the leadership baton at SJVN arrives at a moment when the board seeks continuity and strategic clarity. Gupta’s broader vision, as highlighted in his profile, centers on meeting India’s rising power demand through non-fossil resources while embracing AI, EV integration, cybersecurity, green hydrogen, energy storage and other emerging technologies. As SJVN charts its path in hydro, solar and grid integration, the interim CMD’s extensive sectoral experience and cross-utility leadership could help steer the company through a critical transition toward its next full-time leadership phase.
