Mahesh Muralidhar Pai to become MD & CEO of The South Indian Bank as P R Seshadri retires

The South Indian Bank is navigating a pivotal leadership transition as it bids farewell to P R Seshadri, who steps down as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at the close of September 2026 after completing his tenure. In a move aligned with the bank’s strategic refresh, Mahesh Muralidhar Pai will assume the role of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer from October 1, 2026 for a three-year term, a commission that was approved by the Reserve Bank of India and the bank’s shareholders. Pai’s ascent signals a deliberate shift toward a governance-backed, growth-oriented agenda as the bank positions itself for the next phase of expansion.

Pai, aged 50, arrives with close to three decades of experience across governance, strategy, treasury, foreign exchange, retail, agriculture and MSME credit. Before joining The South Indian Bank, he served as Chief General Manager at Canara Bank, where he led digital banking and innovation initiatives and steered major strategic undertakings. His leadership pedigree includes overseas postings with Canara Bank in New York and board roles with Canara Bank Tanzania Ltd, among others, reflecting a track record of expansive, cross-border banking leadership and deep engagement with technology-enabled transformation.

Ahead of his full-time mandate, Pai had a brief interim spell as Officer on Special Duty for the bank from September 16 to September 30, 2026, before taking charge as MD & CEO on October 1. The retirement of P R Seshadri closes a chapter in which the bank’s leadership was steered by a veteran executive, setting the stage for a new era under Pai’s governance. The bank’s leadership team and stakeholders will be watching closely as the new executive looks to advance governance, strategic execution and a strengthened digital agenda across the organization.
