Equitas Small Finance Bank MD & CEO P. N. Vasudevan to Step Down; Board Initiates Succession Process

Equitas Small Finance Bank is navigating a leadership transition as P. N. Vasudevan, the long-serving Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, has informed the board of his decision to step down effective October 29, 2026. The move, described by the bank as a personal and social initiative, will see Vasudevan continue to discharge his duties until his successor takes over, with the Nominations and Remuneration Committee working to identify suitable internal or external candidates subject to regulatory approvals.

Vasudevan’s tenure has been marked by a steady arc of transformation. Since Equitas’ inception as a microfinance institution in 2007 and its evolution into a Small Finance Bank in 2016, he has steered the bank through multiple growth spurts and strategic shifts. The bank’s leadership highlights a substantial scale-up—branch numbers around 1,100 and a long-term plan projecting a CAGR of 20% plus in advances and deposits through March 2031, aiming to approach Rs 1.2 lakh crore in combined advances and deposits. The bank reported a robust quarter ending September 2026, with total business crossing Rs 1 lakh crore and a quarterly profit of Rs 218 crore, underscoring a period of remarkable momentum.

The board has expressed sincere appreciation for Vasudevan’s leadership, vision, and contributions that helped lay a durable foundation for Equitas’ ongoing progress. In a governance-first stance, the directors emphasized that the appointment of his successor will follow a careful process and will require RBI and other regulatory clearances. The bank also reiterated its commitment to pursue its long-term strategy without disruption, assuring stakeholders that the transition will be managed to reinforce the bank’s fundamentals and growth trajectory. Vasudevan’s decision to step down appears, in part, aimed at aligning governance signals with market perceptions and investor sentiment, particularly in the context of broader family-business dynamics disclosed to regulators and investors over the years.

As Equitas looks to the next chapter, the leadership roster at the top will hinge on selecting a candidate who can continue the bank’s emphasis on fairness, customer-first orientation, and sustainable expansion across the informal and semi-formal segments. The board conveyed best wishes to Vasudevan for his future endeavours and pledged a smooth transition, underscoring that the bank’s strategic ambitions remain intact and on track.
