Bank of Maharashtra has named Saurabh Kumar as GOI Nominee Director on its Board, effective 10 September 2026, succeeding Abhijit Phukon. The government-nominated appointment underscores ongoing government representation at the helm of public sector banks, with the board entry slated to continue until further orders.
Saurabh Kumar, 42, is presently serving as Joint Secretary in the Government of India’s Ministry of Finance, Department of Financial Services. An IAS officer of the 2009 batch from the Chhattisgarh cadre, Kumar holds a Bachelor of Technology (Electronics) and brings more than 17 years of administrative experience. His background spans district administration, urban development, revenue administration and policy-related matters, including prior service as Director in the Department of Revenue, Government of India. Kumar is not related to any existing Bank of Maharashtra director, and he does not appear to be debarred from holding the office of director by regulatory authorities.
The appointment places a government perspective directly on the bank’s board, with Kumar’s governance experience and policy orientation anticipated to inform strategic direction, risk oversight, and public-banking objectives. As a GOI Nominee Director, his presence on the board will complement the bank’s governance framework, reflecting a continuity of public ownership goals and central-government alignment in the bank’s long-term plans.
