Axis Bank shifts leadership mix as CFO resigns; Mallikarjunarao and Sharda secure renewed terms

Axis Bank is steering its leadership curve with a mix of departure and renewal. The bank disclosed that Puneet Sharma, its Chief Financial Officer, has tendered his resignation to pursue the next phase of his professional journey and will be relieved from services by August 31, 2026. The move opens a period of transition for the bank’s finance leadership as it continues to navigate a complex operating environment.

On governance, the Board approved the re-appointment of CH S S Mallikarjunarao as an Independent Director for a second four-year term, from February 1, 2027 to January 31, 2031, subject to member approval. Mallikarjunarao arrives at the board with a deep banking pedigree, including leadership roles such as MD & CEO of Punjab National Bank, and stints as CEO of Allahabad Bank and a long tenure with Syndicate Bank in senior positions. His track record is poised to bring seasoned oversight to Axis Bank’s strategy and risk remit.

In a separate move aligned with executive leadership continuity, Munish Sharda has been re-appointed as Whole-Time Director (Executive Director) for a three-year term from February 27, 2027 to February 26, 2030, subject to RBI clearance and member approval. Sharda brings more than three decades of cross-sector experience across banking, insurance, consumer goods, and manufacturing, including leadership roles at Future Generali India Life Insurance and Citibank India. The bank notes that both Mallikarjunarao and Sharda are not debarred from holding office by any regulatory authority, underscoring governance continuity amid the shifts.

Together, the moves reflect Axis Bank’s focus on strengthening governance through experienced leadership while ensuring strategic continuity in finance and executive oversight. With the CFO transition underway and seasoned directors stepping into renewed terms, the bank aims to align its financial discipline, risk management, and customer-focused growth with long-term performance objectives.
