GIC Re elevates Prerana Puthran to Chief Risk Officer, reshaping its risk leadership

In a focused board meeting on October 9, 2026, General Insurance Corporation of India announced a leadership shift at the top of its risk function. Prerana Puthran has been appointed Chief Risk Officer, taking over from Executive Director Jayashri Balkrishna, with effect from today. The move underscores GIC Re’s emphasis on strengthening its risk governance framework as the reinsurer navigates a dynamic market environment.

A longtime GIC Re veteran, Prerana Puthran joined the company in 1992 and has served across multiple functions, building a reputation for deep risk insight. A commerce graduate and Fellow of the Insurance Institute of India (FIII), she has held leadership roles in Underwriting, Enterprise Risk Management, Claims, Corporate Communications, Investor Relations and Credit Rating. In her current capacity as Deputy General Manager, she heads the Enterprise Risk Management Department, CSR and Investment Mid Back, bringing a broad view of risk governance and reporting to the fore.

The board’s decision to elevate Puthran to Chief Risk Officer replaces Balkrishna, who held the Executive Director role prior to this reshuffle. The appointment reflects GIC Re’s commitment to internal leadership development and continuity in its risk oversight functions, with Puthran positioned to guide enterprise-wide risk assessment, governance practices and strategic risk mitigation.

Together with this leadership move, the corporation also signaled ongoing operational steps, noting in-principle relocation of its office premises to facilitate repairs and maintenance. As GIC Re strengthens its risk-management discipline, the new CRO’s mandate will likely shape how the company balances growth with resilience in a complex insurance landscape.
