The New India Assurance Company Limited has tapped a familiar face from within its ranks to shoulder its top leadership on an interim basis. The company informed the exchanges that Ministry of Finance has assigned additional charge to S Sivasankar, Executive Director, for the post of Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of NIACL, effective from the vacancy date 01 August 2026. The arrangement is valid for an initial period of three months or until a regular CMD is appointed, or until further orders, whichever comes earliest. This move signals a continuity plan as the insurer navigates the transition toward a permanent CMD.
S Sivasankar brings a long arc of experience in the insurance sector. The brief profile shared by NIACL shows he joined National Insurance Company Ltd (NICL) as a direct recruit in 1991, is a commerce graduate, and is a Fellow of the Insurance Institute of India with an Associate diploma in Marine Insurance. Over 33 years, he has held a range of leadership roles across NICL’s back office, regional, and head office functions, including stints as head of Branch and Divisional Offices, Corporate and large-claims handling, and senior executive leadership roles at NICL’s Head Office as Chief Manager, DGM, and GM. He joined The New India Assurance Company Limited’s Board as an Executive Director on 20 February 2026, underscoring the insurer’s preference for deep, cross-cutting governance experience within the sector.
The company notes that Mr. Sivasankar is not related to any other director on the NIACL board, aligning with expectations of transparent governance as leadership transitions unfold. While the CMD appointment is being resolved, NIACL will rely on his breadth of experience—from operations to corporate claims—to maintain strategic momentum and oversight across its various lines of business. Stakeholders will be watching closely as the interim command underscores a broader plan to cement stable leadership and steer the company through the interim period toward a refreshed CMD appointment.
