Torrent Pharmaceuticals appoints Shanti Ekambaram as Independent Director to bolster governance

Torrent Pharmaceuticals Limited has announced the appointment of Shanti Ekambaram as an Additional Independent Director, effective 30 July 2026 for a term of three consecutive years, subject to shareholders’ approval. The move is framed as a step to strengthen board governance as the company continues to navigate a dynamic pharmaceutical landscape.

Ekambaram brings 39 years of experience in financial services and banking, including a long tenure at Kotak Mahindra Bank (about 35 years). From 2022 to 2025, she served as Deputy Managing Director and Whole-time Director, providing strategic oversight across Digital Banking, Treasury, Human Resources, Internal Audit, Vigilance, CSR/ESG, and capital-market subsidiaries. Earlier in her career, she led Kotak Mahindra Capital Company (1997-2003), the investment-banking joint venture with Goldman Sachs, and was at the forefront of modernizing India’s equity capital markets, notably guiding the Hughes Software IPO in 1999.

Her current board roles include Kotak Mahindra Capital Company, Kotak Securities, Havells India Limited, and the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, where she helps steer strategic direction for India’s premier business-education institution. Ekambaram has been widely recognized for her leadership, including top listings on industry rankings and awards such as Candere Hurun India Women Leaders List 2025 and The CEO Magazine’s Business Woman of the Year 2025. She is a Chartered Accountant and Cost Accountant, and she is not related to Torrent’s directors nor debarred from holding directorships by SEBI or other authorities.

Torrent’s board notes that the appointment, while subject to shareholder approval, underscores its commitment to deepening governance capabilities as it pursues growth initiatives and strategic transformation in the years ahead.
