In a move that underscores government influence over MTNL’s governance, the state-owned carrier disclosed that two Government Nominee Directors are stepping down with effect from 08 July 2026. Sunil Kumar Ranjan, who served as DDG (C & A) at the Department of Telecommunications, and Alok Shukla, an Advisor at DoT, will no longer sit on MTNL’s board.
Taking their place are Shyamal Misra, Additional Secretary (Telecommunications), and K Balaji, Joint Secretary (Administration), both appointed as Government Nominee Directors ex-officio on the MTNL board with immediate effect and until further orders.
The leadership reshuffle signals a continued refresh of governance at MTNL as the DoT maintains its oversight of the company. The incoming appointees bring the DoT’s policy direction and administrative experience to the board, while the departing officials’ exits close a specific chapter of government representation at MTNL.
As MTNL navigates a challenging telecom landscape, the board’s blend of government oversight and industry expertise will be closely watched by stakeholders seeking stability and a clearer strategic path for the company.
