Petronet LNG appoints Deepak Gupta as Nominee Director from GAIL to its board

In a move that underscores a shift in the boardroom steering for Petronet LNG Limited, the company has appointed Deepak Gupta as a Nominee Director from GAIL (India) Limited, effective March 18, 2026. The decision, taken at the board meeting and on the recommendation of the Nomination and Remuneration Committee, signals a strengthening of governance ties with one of India’s marquee gas utilities.

Deepak Gupta arrives on the Petronet LNG board with a rich engineering and leadership pedigree. A Mechanical Engineer from Delhi College of Engineering, he brings more than 35 years of senior-level experience across the oil and gas value chain. Since February 2022, he has served as Director (Projects) at GAIL, overseeing the execution of high-impact initiatives spanning natural gas and LPG pipelines, gas processing units, critical SCADA infrastructure, and green-energy projects aimed at advancing net-zero goals. His portfolio also includes the operation and maintenance of a vast network exceeding 20,000 km of pipelines and associated facilities, along with leadership of major cross-functional programs.

Gupta’s resume features stints across GAIL’s joint ventures and leadership roles that highlight his capability in strategic goal-setting, stakeholder alignment, and governance. He has chaired or led boards of several entities, including Talcher Fertilizers Ltd. and ONGC Petro-additions Limited (OPaL), and has steered large-scale projects such as landmark greenfield developments and international collaborations. Notably, he led digital transformation efforts within GAIL to boost operational agility and transparency, and earlier in his career he helmed initiatives—from mega refinery and petrochemical projects to international expansion—that demonstrate a track record of project acceleration and complex execution. He is not debarred from holding office, and there are no inter-se relationships with Petronet LNG’s other directors; he does not hold Petronet LNG equity.

Observers will look to Gupta’s blend of technical rigor and strategic leadership to shape Petronet LNG’s next phase as it navigates growth, reliability, and sustainability in a dynamic gas landscape. The nomination also reflects an ongoing emphasis on strengthening governance through experienced industry veterans who can bridge operations, development, and policy imperatives at the board level.
