Tata Steel Limited has unveiled a leadership transition in its senior management, appointing Manish Garg as Chief Information Officer, effective November 1, 2026, as Jayanta Banerjee superannuates from the same date. The move reflects an internal succession in the company’s information technology leadership, with Garg stepping up to steer the CIO agenda while Banerjee steps back after a long tenure at the helm of IT strategy and operations.
Banerjee’s impending retirement closes a significant chapter in Tata Steel’s digital leadership. Garg, who has been serving as CIO designate since January 2026, will assume full responsibilities as part of a planned transition designed to preserve continuity in the company’s technology roadmap amid ongoing digital transformation efforts.
Garg brings a deep track record in digital transformation and technology–driven growth. He joined Tata Steel as CIO designate in January 2026 and has been in the role for several months. He previously spent close to 29 years with Tata Consultancy Services, working across BFSI, manufacturing, retail, healthcare, energy and other sectors, leading global teams and major transformation programs. He holds a B.E. from SGSITS Indore and two MTech degrees—one in Thermal Sciences & Fluid Mechanics from IIT Kanpur and another in Social & Behavioural Sciences from IIT Delhi—endowing him with a broad technology leadership and governance perspective that aligns with Tata Steel’s strategic push toward data-led decisions and sustainability.
