Mukesh Choudhary named Executive Director (HR) on additional charge at Coal India

Coal India Limited has tapped Mukesh Choudhary to take on Director (HR) duties on an additional charge basis, effective July 28, 2026. The appointment, disclosed to the exchanges, comes with an initial three-month term or until a regular incumbent is appointed, whichever is earlier, and follows a formal approval from the Ministry of Coal.

Choudhary, currently Director (Marketing) at Coal India, brings a cross-functional pedigree to the HR helm. An alumnus of Engineering College Kota with a B.Eng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, he also holds a Master of Financial Analysis and an MBA. His governance footprint spans several government-owned coal companies where he has served on boards including Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), CMPDIL, NTPL and SCCL. He also sits on the boards of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd, Bharat Coking Coal Limited and Coal India Navikarniya Urja Ltd, and holds 1,200 Coal India shares.

Industry watchers say the move underscores Coal India’s approach to grooming leadership through broad-based exposure across marketing and human resources functions, even as it maintains board-level oversight. The HR portfolio is pivotal in a sector facing demand volatility and regulatory shifts, and Choudhary’s background in both engineering and financial analysis could help align talent strategy with operational priorities.

Coal India’s leadership transition, while procedural in its three-month window, signals a broader pattern of internal mobility within India’s state-led energy giants, where senior executives step into addl-charge roles to ensure leadership continuity as the search for regular incumbents proceeds.
