Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), the Defence Ministry’s public sector arm and a key supplier to India’s military, has announced the appointment of Shailesh Vagerwal as Chairman and Managing Director, effective July 9, 2026. The move places a seasoned defence manufacturing executive at the helm of the Hyderabad-based veteran, aimed at steering the PSU through a period of intensified domestic production and export potential for munitions and related systems.
Shailesh Vagerwal arrives with a background steeped in the Indian Ordnance Factories Service, bringing close to three decades of experience across defence manufacturing, administration, and strategic planning. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from MBM Engineering College, Jodhpur, and an MS in Explosive Ordnance Engineering from Cranfield University in the United Kingdom. His career spans several critical Ordnance Factories and units within the defence ecosystem.
In his brief profile, Vagerwal’s leadership tenure includes key postings at Ordnance Factory Dum Dum, Itarsi, Khamaria, and Munitions India Limited’s Corporate Office in Pune. His expertise encompasses ammunition and explosives production, procurement, project management, quality assurance, exports, and human resources—areas that are central to BDL’s mandate of self-reliant defence manufacturing and timely delivery to the armed forces.
BDL’s leadership transition arrives at a moment when India is pushing for greater indigenization and expanded export presence in the defence sector. Vagerwal’s long-standing experience across factories and defence PSUs could be pivotal in advancing BDL’s modernization drive, strengthening the supply chain, and deeper integration with the broader Munitions India Limited framework to bolster India’s strategic industrial base.
