HDFC Bank appoints Jigar Shah as General Counsel-Designate and Puneet Sharma as CFO-Designate

HDFC Bank is reshaping its leadership bench, naming two senior executives to key designations as it gears up for the next phase of growth. The board has approved the appointment of Jigar Shah as General Counsel-Designate, effective August 20, 2026, with a view to him stepping into the General Counsel role on October 1, 2026. In parallel, Puneet Sharma has been appointed as Chief Financial Officer-Designate, effective September 1, 2026, with the full CFO responsibilities kicking in from December 1, 2026. Both appointments mark a deliberate expansion of the bank’s senior leadership team as it navigates a complex regulatory and market environment.

Jigar Shah enters with more than three decades of experience across legal, compliance, governance and regulatory affairs in the financial services sector. His career spans leadership roles at KKR India, JPMorgan Chase Bank and Deutsche Bank, among others, with notable stints in asset workouts and strategic advisory. Shah’s track record includes building robust legal and governance frameworks, a capability the bank likely seeks to fortify as it advances large-scale initiatives and regulatory dialogue.

Puneet Sharma brings over 25 years of financial leadership to the table, most recently serving as Group Executive and CFO at Axis Bank Limited, where he oversaw the finance function, investor relations and other core corporate functions. His prior roles include chief financial leadership at Tata Capital Limited and senior positions at Citibank and The Boston Consulting Group. Sharma’s breadth—spanning financial planning, capital management, and regulatory engagement—positions him to strengthen HDFC Bank’s financial architecture and strategic execution as the bank scales its ambitions.

Together, the appointments underscore HDFC Bank’s emphasis on strengthening governance, financial discipline and legal-structural strength at the top of the organization. As both executives join the bank’s senior management, their combined expertise is expected to bolster the bank’s ability to manage risk, optimize capital and sustain growth in a dynamic regulatory and competitive landscape.
